During the winter season, amidst holiday parties and gatherings, many people struggle with negative emotions that could lead to depression. Although many of us perceive this time of year as being joyful and giving, others cope with winter blues during the season. For some, the holidays can bring out their worst feelings, and many folks just go through the motions--not fully able to partake in festivities because there’s gloominess lying beneath the surface. These feelings may come on gradually, yet if you isolate yourself, those bad feelings could fester. Below are a few steps to start the process of conquering the winter blues. Recognize It Acknowledge your emotional state of mind. We ask each other ‘How are you doing?’ as a greeting rather than a question. Really ask yourself that question and ponder it before responding. Your current emotional stability may be connected to your recent circumstances or traumatic events from the past. Be the first person to recognize your winter blues and be determined to end them. Get Help Once you’ve recognized that you have winter blues, take out time to pray and ask God for His help. Psalm 121:1-2 says “I will lift up my eyes to the hills—from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121 is a beautiful passage of scripture that reminds us that the Lord is our help. Praying to Him should be first because He is our Creator and can guide you down the right path to feeling great again. Make A Change Now that you recognize it, are you willing to do something different for a change? Be open to the Lord’s guidance which may cause you to change. We are creatures of habit, and often times those habits can cause us to become weary of the daily mundane routines we have created. As you allow the Lord to guide you, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and make changes. The change you make today just might be the change you need to chase away your winter blues.
